The WP2Woo Podcast – Episode 16

Welcome to Episode 16 of the WP2Woo Podcast.

We’re right out of our routine this week and we’re recording it at 6.30pm instead of around 3am as we usually do.

What’s new

No support for early versions of IE
This week we talk about WordPress ditching support of older versions of Internet Explorer starting at IE 11 because those early versions can’t work with the latest https encryption methods that WordPress is using.

HTTPS by default
Chrome 90 is due out mid-April and it will start using https by default and

Selling Products Through Elementor
Don’t get two excited but Elementor now gives you the chance to add a single ‘Buy Now’ button to a page. That means that you can now sell one product on a website that you have built with Elementor.

Adding Different Headers to Your WooCommerce Pages

Toni talks about adding different headers to different pages in your online shop. While Toni uses Elementor there are other page builders that will allow you to do the same.

It’s important to note that each page in your online shop should have a similar look and feel to all the others because you can go too far and scare people away because they’re not sure whether they are on the same website or not.

Website Security Headers

Stuart takes you deeper into the world of Security Headers with a look at the most important ones and you will find his notes here
.

Coming to grips with website security headers and understanding how they work and what you have to do to add them to your website is really, really important so start looking at them now so that your website is ready when Google starts looking at them as ranking factors.

Accessibility

We talked about the importance of making your website accessible last week but it needed to be mentioned again because it is becoming more and more important every month.

Trade Marks

We had a brief peek into the question of Trade Marks too because, if you are trying to build a brand of any sort, you need the protection that a Trade Mark can give you … and knowing where to point a client who asks you about a Trade Mark can be a boost to your business too.

You will find more information about Trade Marks here.

Children’s Safety Online

This has been a concern for us almost from the first day we ventured onto the Net. The World Wide Web is a wonderful place full of amazing information and lots of great things to see.

But we knew from the start that it would be a haven for evil people who wanted to prey on children and gullible adults. We’ve come up against some of those people before and we did again this last week when Police accidentally discovered that someone very close to us was being groomed.

Toni ends the podcast with a suggestion that you have to do more than just warn kids about the dangers and ask them to tell if someone approaches.

Trust and all those other excuses that we make to cover the fact that we’re too lazy to check our kids’ phones and Internet history are just that … excuses.

It’s time to stop hiding behind excuses and do your job as a parent because it is your job … your responsibility …  to protect your kids from the evil that is waiting for them just the other side of your Internet connection.
